At our most recent meeting...

At our most recent meeting, Julie Ochs presented "What is IAQ?"

We learned that Indoor Air Quality refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures especially as it relates to the health and comfort of its occupants. Understanding and controlling common pollutants indoors can help reduce your risk of indoor health concerns.

What are the culprits? VOC - Volatile Organic Compounds are given off by many things like furniture, mattresses, cleaning supplies, carpet, paint, fuel-burning heat sources, attached garages, radon gas, candles, and cigarettes/tobacco.

Long-term consequences can include respiratory illnesses, impaired cognitive function, and even cancer. The bottom line is that many factors affect our IAQ but we can improve IAQ. Some ways of doing this include making sure your property is ventilated, performing regular maintenance on HVAC units, changing indoor air filters, and avoiding carpeting. The biggest improvement can be bringing houseplants that can clean your air like the peace lily, snake plant, English ivy, and fichus.
