Club News & Announcements
From the President

A reminder: Our next meeting is a joint meeting with Kiwanis at La Familia restaurant. We will be meeting on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 and NOT Thursday, September 27.

Some calendar items:
  • On October 4 we may do a service meeting at an elementary school. Stay tuned for details.
  • We will have a morning meeting at Marian Manor on October 11, from 8:30 to about 9:30. We'll be treated to breakfast and visit with the residents there.
  • The planned PRIDE event has been pushed further in the calendar but still in the works.

Joe recently was able to visit with Debbie Logan to see how things are going with the Interact Club. They are quite busy and have a number of service projects lined up for the fall. They are still weaving mats from plastic bags, and are collecting donations of clean plastic bags. As in years past, there will be a joint meeting with the club, likely in January/ February.

Guests
You can bring a guest to a Rotary meeting!

Last Week's Speaker

At our most recent meeting, held on September 20th, we were treated to a presentation by guest speaker Robert Cabral. Bob is a survivor of a Traumatic Brain Injury and shared his personal story of his life both before and after this life-changing event. After an inspiring and challenging road through recovery, Bob is an active volunteer in his community, including at PRIDE Inc. He has trained for and completed a 5K, 1/2 marathon, and the Falmouth Road Race. He is a devoted father and husband as well as a motivational speaker. Bob is scheduled to speak at Harvard this Fall to share his motivational and inspirational talk about life after a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It was a pleasure to learn from Bob's experiences and we thank him so much for joining us for lunch!

Happy Bucks
Did you know that your happy and sad bucks help the club make a donation to the Rotary Foundation?
  • Joanne had 5 bucks. The first was for our speaker. The second was that the Pats lost (which is sad) but at least it wasn't a home game she was at. The rest were for her fellow Rotarians and all the connections she has made which help her every day in her job.
  • Mike was happy that his younger son turned 18 and 13 members of his family got to celebrate with a trip to Ireland and a tour of the Guinness brewery!
  • Harry had a welcome buck for John joining the club. He had a sad buck for the Red Sox not being able to clinch the AL East against the Yankees the past two nights. And then, under pressure from the Sergeant-at-Arms, he handed over his remaining dollar bills.
  • Johnny B was happy to be at the meeting and happy to see some people he hadn't seen in a while at Rotary.
  • Carol Souza had a happy/sad buck as this will be her last Rotary meeting until December. She also had a happy buck that "God Bless America" has yet to be sung in a key she can sing in her 24 years of Rotary.
  • Ed had a happy dollar for Harry's generous happy/sad buck donation this week. He also shared an interesting story that for the first time in his business career he tried to overnight something and the Post Office did not guarantee they could get it there due to Hurricane Florence. Let's all spare a thought for what those folks are all currently going through.
  • Dick Shafer had an Info buck. There are a lot of great things happening in Downtown. The Chamber is hosting a Business After Hours tonight at Morton Hospital. This weekend there is the Downtown Fall Fest and a Tom Raines concert at the new District Center for the Arts.
  • Joe L. had two happy bucks. He was excited to welcome Shannon to the meeting and preliminary reports for Scout recruitment are looking good. He also recently had a great tour of the Boys and Girls Club with Katie Dawkins and is excited to see all that is going on there!
