President Carol Sullivan began our February 23, 2017 meeting with news that the Interact Club dinner will be the evening of Thursday, April 13. We have several guests attending from the Rotary District as well as the Interact students and advisor Debbie Logan. Hopefully, all Rotarians will make it a point to attend this meeting.

Stephanie M. shared a reminder that next  Friday, March 3 at 8 a.m. the Y will kick off the community portion of their annual campaign with a hot breakfast. Please RSVP by February 28th if you plan to attend, and she offered thanks to the Rotarians who always make sure the club is well represented.

Another reminder that the TASC Spelling Bee will takes place on March 8. Rotary will be represented by the team of Stephanie Mancini, Linda Quinn, and Johnny B. Good luck and have fun!

Ed Fowler shared a reminder that the nominating committee is hard at work trying to fill the 20 positions for the club next year. If you'd like to volunteer for one, please speak with Ed.

Dave C. had a Pancake and Family Fun Day announcement, stating that the sponsorship plan is in place for this year. The goal is to have a greater number of sponsors and lower entry price points to be as attractive as possible to as many businesses as possible. Many thanks to Dave and everyone else who has alreadyput in lots of hard work towards this year's Pancake and Family Fun Day.

Happy & Sad Bucks

Did you know that your happy and sad bucks help the club make a donation to the Rotary Foundation?

  • Bob Hunt had a sad buck because he is going to miss the next two meetings. He also had a happy buck because he is leaving for two weeks in St. Thomas!
  • Dick S. had a sad buck because he is also going to miss the next two meetings. His happy buck is because he is going to be in Costa Rica!
  • Dave Tipping had 5 bucks. The first was sad because he lost his mother last week. The second was happy because of her being in a better place. The last 3 were heartfelt bucks for all of the kind words of past and present Rotarians who showed great support during a difficult time.

Program Speaker
At our most recent meeting, Thursday, February 23, 2017, Stephanie Mancini was the Program Chair. She introduced arranged for Sandy Bromberg, Director of Adult programs and Regional Vice President of the Old Colony YMCA. Sandy gave a very informative program about the work that the Social Services Branch of the Y engages in, bridging the gap between people in the criminal justice system who are looking for means of support to reduce their risk of recidivism. Funded through the Departments of Youth Services (DYS), Department of Children and Families (DCF), and Mental Health (DMH), the Old Colony Y offers assessment and individualized treatment with a multidisciplinary approach that involves the entire family.  The programs also work to ensure youth have a long term system of support and resources in order to maintain a positive lifestyle and grow into healthy, productive adults. You can learn more on their website here.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 2, 2017, and we will be welcoming Jackie Jones, AICP, SRPEDD Principal Transportation Planner.  Jackie will be presenting: Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning in SE Massachusetts focusing on highlights from around the region, followed by a Q & A.
