A new President has been installed. Joseph Mitchell is the 94th President of the Rotary Club of Taunton. Please join President Joe on July 9th as he welcomes Maddie Lukes and Archie Mason, from Taunton, England as they share with the club their experiences of the good ole USA. Remember the meeting for July 16, 2015 has been moved to Wednesday, July 15th at the Fairhaven club. More details to follow at the club meeting next week.

Rotary releases $40.3 million for polio immunization activities

Rotary is releasing $40.3 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, three countries where the disease has never been stopped.

The funds will help build on gains Rotary and its partners have been making in the fight to eradicate polio. Nigeria hasn’t seen a polio case since 24 July 2014 and the World Health Organization could remove it from the list of polio-endemic countries as soon as September if no cases are reported. Nigeria would have to go another two years without a case to be certified polio-free.

But the progress is fragile, and much work remains to reach the goal of a polio-free world. Rotary’s funds announced this week include $9.9 million in Nigeria; $12.2 million in Pakistan, and $2.3 million in Afghanistan. In addition, the money will support immunization activities in countries still at risk including Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Niger, Somalia, and South Sudan.

As the bulletin editor and fellow club member I want to thank each and every member for their patience with me as I worked through learning to operate the new bulletin format. I was not able to dedicate the time needed this past Spring due to work obligations but am confident that going forward the club will be well served by this bulletin editor.

A special thanks to John Beauchaine for his patience with me through this time and to President Joe for his continued confidence.
